New York CDL Practice Test 2026 & NY DMV Rules

New York City Low Bridges & Thruway Tandem Rules
- New York City parkways (Belt, FDR, Cross Island, Taconic) strictly ban commercial vehicles; bridges under 9 feet exist.
- New York State Thruway permits Longer Combination Vehicles (LCVs, tandem 48/53 ft trailers) under special Thruway tandem permits.
- HazMat vehicles cannot use the lower level of the George Washington Bridge or any enclosed NYC tunnel.
- NY DMV requires 80% on the 50-question CDL General Knowledge test.
Official New York Test Format
- Licensing Agency: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
- General Knowledge: 50 questions, 80% to pass (at least 40 correct).
- Air Brakes Endorsement: 25 questions, 80% to pass (required for air-equipped rigs).
- Combination Vehicles: 20 questions, 80% to pass (Class A tractor-trailers).
- Modernized Pre-Trip Inspection: 4-Zone component walkaround + 4-Step air brake test.
